Happy to provide an explanation (although Matt may wish to chip in)….
Apart from The Sweeney being perhaps the coolest 70s cop show and Everton doing something similar by the playing the theme from Z-Cars at the start of their matches, Matt and I have been trying to come up with a cool nickname for Guildford City for ages. Our thinking turned to the team colours – red and white. First of all I suggested ‘the piggies’ (a not very flattering nickname Sheffield Weds have for Sheff Utd but hey-ho better than nothing…); then we thought about ‘the lions’ but again not very original.
It was at Banstead a few weeks ago that it hit us – City play in the same colours as a barber’s pole. Matt suggested we be called ‘The Sweeney Todds’ and I suggested why not just ‘The Sweeney’. Hence the nickname was born.
The race was then on to get the theme tune ready for the Carshalton match. Matt took charge of this. I was expecting him to have just downloaded it off the internet but in the end he ended up re-arranging and then re-recording the tune with a few of his student friends – hence the crazy guitar solo at the end that was never in the 40 second version that appeared on TV!!

Sorry for the confusion... thought it would be good for us to have an anthem to run out to!
We got bored one night (the pubs had shut) so we went into one of the studios here at uni and recorded the 'Guildford City' version of The Sweeney. Credit to Joe and (the other) Matt who played the sax and guitar bits, sounds pretty good even though I do say so myself!
There's also a hilarious version of it with Joe and I doing vocals over the top... we did loads of takes in different voices to try and make it sound like a crowd but it ended up sounding more like a Monty Python sketch.
I'll upload the MP3 in a bit... or Stu will...

Having been at the club for what seems eons and having thought about nicknames many times, this is a very creative 'out of the box' nickname. You've sold it to me lads - well done.
(By the way I can't remember the old Guildford City running out to any music, but that could just be my memory - Eddie or Peter can confirm I'm sure).

Not even having been born when the Joseph's Road ground closed I wouldn't know. I have a programme from 1966 though which proves there was definitely a DJ (although how much the crowd liked him I'm not sure - the programme says he has had no song requests from City fans). The idea was to 'liven up the waiting time before the game and during the interval'.

Yeah They definately had a "running out to" tune. It was probably a Sousa march played by a Military Band or somesuch but I'm d**ned if I can remember the tune or what it was.

I don't remember the team running out to a particular theme but i do remember the "radio dj booth" at the old ground. It was a small portacabin (on small stilts i think) in the corner of the ground under one of the floodlights. If you looked at the main stand from the other side of the pitch it was on the left hand side. Does anybody remember the programme shop, that was on the opposite corner of the ground from the radio booth and was the first place i bought programmes for my collection! Oh well, back to today, i agree the new tune sounds good and has a good feel ot it as the new tune for the new team. Well done

Glad to see the explanation above, was wondering when people would start asking questions... I have to say I'm liking the solo, even if I say so myself! Any news on when the new flag will be ready Matt? Also, great pic Scottie
