Surrey County Midweek Floodlit Youth Cup, Round 2.
Well if all the talk with both home and away support was right, then that was the Woking Academy top team that paid us a visit last night.
So we bowed out of the County Cup to our bigger neighbours who deserved the win but we're we completly outplayed? No, I don't think so, for we had our moments also which is all good encouragement.
Cty started brightly taking the game to Woking but the visitors first attempt on goal also opened their account for the night. A strong run down the right, holding off all challenges to the bye-line, cut back for Woking striker Rob Carr to slam home from 6 yards, centre of goal. Ten minutes later they doubled their lead. The ball was floated over the penalty spot from the left, where ex-City player Josh Coke caught it on his chest and volleyed home.
So, 15 minutes in and 2-0 down, a hard lesson looked to be handed out by the Cards but City rallied well and started to battle. Towards the end of the half City had good spells of dominant play with Mickey Cunningham, Jack Holloway and Jamie Whittaker (who had played a full game for the City 1st team only the night before!) all cracking off shots, but all dealt with by Woking's comfortable looking keeper.
2nd half started lively restoring the high tempo game. City Goal keeper Ali McQueen called upon 10 minutes in when a Woking free kick flew destined for top left, but Ali's acrobatics denied. Minutes later though Woking sealed the result with two goals in quick succession. Now, I missed this because I was collecting the half-time jugs from the changing rooms, but in those couple of minutes we went from 0-2 to 0-4. Don't think I'll collect the jugs again!
Apparently, the third goal came over the top, center of goal and struck into the bottom left corner with the big shout for handball going unheard. The fourth, one minute later, Woking came down the left squared across the face of goal for a far-post tap-in.
A few substitutions for City saw our 15-year olds make an appearance and their promising talent came trough. With a result out of reach, City relaxed and put the ball on the floor more playing some nice football resulting in a period of posession and flow, chances on goal. Having contained City, Woking rallied five minutes from time to hit the crossbar and deliver dangerous free kick over, though their passage into the third round was secure.
All in all an entertaining hi-tempo game, and despite the result we can take some quiet positives from our lads who, by and large, did their best to rise to the challenge.
Next week, we do it all again when Woking send their Southern Youth League team to us in a League fixture, and that will bring us another entertaining game (Weds 26th, 7:45 k.o. at The Spectrum).

Oh yeah, and a big thanks to all of the Guildford City Boys who came down for Ball-Boy duties, and thanks to Robin for setting up camp with the hot dogs and burgers to compliment everything Georgia has in the tuck shop! Yum ;-)
